This innovative hydroponic farming system allows Thayer to cultivate a wide variety of food crops including traditional leafy greens, herbs, and microgreens. Harvested crops will more sustainably support the Academy’s dining hall and will contribute in the fight against food insecurity in surrounding communities.

The container farm is equipped with two distinct hydroponic systems – deep water culture (DWC) and nutrient film technique (NFT) – to provide the most suitable growing environment for each type of produce. The DWC system is ideal for crops with extensive root systems, while the NFT system caters to shallow-rooted plants, ensuring optimal nutrient absorption and growth.

Students, faculty, and staff will collaboratively manage all aspects of Thayer Farms – a model for innovative, technology-smart, and eco-friendly food production.
