Save the Date: Monday, April 13, 2026

The fourth annual James Tufts Pener Environmental Stewardship Conference will take place Monday, April 13, on campus. The conference celebrates the spirit and legacy of James Tufts Pener ’23, who tragically lost his life just before his senior year at Thayer. In keeping with Pener’s passion for the environment and sustainability, the conference focuses on what students can do about the important issues facing the environment. The inaugural conference was held in May of 2023 with students from Brookline High School and Thayer Academy delivering 12-15 minute presentations using a TED Talks model. The 2024 conference had 13 different schools and organizations join Thayer students for eight student presentations and eight hour-long, student-run workshops on sustainability and environmentalism; more than 125 students and faculty attended. The 2025 conference saw 10 schools and/or organizations join Thayer students; presentations included “Tackling Recycling With AI” and “Using and Advocating For Sustainable Transportation.”

Pete Malinowski, co-founder and CEO of the Billion Oyster Project out of New York City, will be this year’s keynote speaker. Conference organizers have reached out to all of Thayer’s Upper School students in addition to inviting students from 24 surrounding private and public high schools to attend, give a presentation, or lead a workshop.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Upper School Science Faculty Skip Schneider P ’20, ’22

Keystone Species Restoration in an Urban Setting:
Pete Malinowski, President and CEO of Billion Oyster Project

Pete Malinowski grew up farming oysters with his parents and siblings on the Fishers Island Oyster
Farm. His passion for the environment and education led him to the New York Harbor School, where
he founded the school’s aquaculture and oyster restoration programs and spent five years as a teacher.
This work at Harbor School led to the development of Billion Oyster Project in 2014. For the last decade Malinowski has led Billion Oyster Project and efforts to build a clean, accessible, and abundant New York
Harbor that is well-known, well-loved and well-cared-for by the greatest city in the world. Malinowski spends as much of his free time as possible on the water or in the woods with his three children: Adrian, Maxwell, and Daisy.
