The Health & Wellness Center

Thayer Academy’s Health & Wellness Center brings physical health and mental health together under one roof. The first floor houses the Academy’s nursing staff to support the health needs of all Thayer students. The second floor provides space for trained counselors to work with students to address their social/emotional and mental health needs in a caring, compassionate environment. The center features offices for nurses and counselors, a conference space for meeting and collaboration, a Quiet/Relaxation Room for students to use during free periods to decompress, and a dedicated telehealth space for students to engage in counseling with outside providers during the school day, as needed. The shared, collaborative space is part of a comprehensive initiative to support student emotional and physical health, thereby promoting growth, learning, and wellness.

Health Services

Thayer Academy school nurses are caring, compassionate, competent and committed to supporting health needs of the Thayer Academy students. Thayer's policies and procedures for School Health Services facilitate health and safety, and are in compliance with Massachusetts regulations. Whether your student has a chronic medical condition that will likely impact academics, or develops an acute injury or illness requiring short-term recovery, Thayer Academy Nurses will:

  • provide basic health assessment and supportive interventions
  • support a specific medical treatment plan while at school
  • advocate for your child, by communicating pertinent information with the team of teachers and staff
  • provide education and support to students and faculty/staff about specific medical conditions
  • facilitate your child's ability to advocate for themselves.

Nurses are on campus from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. All students are expected to have their own Primary Care Physician and Health Insurance. The School Nurses also consult with the Thayer Academy School Physician Consultant and with the local Board of Health Nurse as needed for challenging medical situations or infectious disease concerns.

The Upper School Health Services is located at the Health & Wellness Center at 19 Hobart Street, while the Middle School Health Services is located in the Nurses Office (Room 121) at the Thayer Academy Middle School.

Counseling

Counselors are available to speak with students to help facilitate educational, social, and emotional support on an as-needed basis. Along with faculty members and administrators, counselors can serve as part of a team to collaborate with respect to a student’s educational experiences at the Academy.

Counselors are also available to talk with parents/guardians on issues regarding their students. The Counseling Office maintains a list of referrals for educational, intellectual, psychological, or speech and language evaluations should parents/guardians wish to consult with the Academy regarding such an evaluation.
