Upper School Placement Testing Dates and Information

Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Southworth Library

Saturday, May 2, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Southworth Library

Placement for incoming students is primarily determined by Thayer placement test results, grades and recommendations from a student’s previous school, and scores on the SSAT. Many students may earn Honors/AP placement in later years if they demonstrate significant improvement in their skills and a consistent commitment to the subject, even if they are not placed in those levels as a 9th grader.

Math
All students are required to take a math placement exam on campus.

World Language
Upper School students are required to take one World Language. If a student would like to repeat or take the first year of a language, no assessment test will be required—please indicate this on your election form.

If a student would like to continue the language they have been studying at their previous school, or switch to a language they have previously studied, an online assessment test will be required for placement.

Please complete the World Language Course Election form and the online assessment test (if applicable) by Monday, May 4, at 11:59 PM.

English
Only students interested in Honors/AP level classes must take a placement exam.

History
Only students interested in Honors/AP level classes must take a placement exam. Students should prepare by reading and annotating a text. Please print, read, and annotate the text appropriate for your grade level for the 2026–27 academic year, and bring your annotated text with you to the placement exam.

Readings for Honors/AP History placement tests:

  • Incoming 9th graders interested in World History I – Honors: Print, read, and annotate this text ahead of time
  • Incoming 10th graders interested in World History II – Honors: Print, read, and annotate this text ahead of time
  • Incoming 11th graders interested in History of American Democracy – Honors or AP U.S. History: Print, read, and annotate this text ahead of time

Science
No placement tests are offered for Science. Some science placements are determined by math placement.
