Thayer Upper and Middle School students heard a message of inclusion, kindness, and perseverance from motivational speaker Kelsey Tainsh on Monday. Kelsey shared her captivating story with students during Monday Meeting in the Upper School and in an all-school assembly at the Middle School.
At age 5 Kelsey was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She overcame her diagnosis and had an active, happy childhood. As a teen she excelled in sports and was ranked 2nd in the country and 3rd in the world in girls wakeboarding. She also helped her rowing team win a state championship. At the age of 15 the tumor returned, and she had a stroke. She was paralyzed on her right side after the stroke and had to re-learn how to feed herself, get dressed, and walk. Despite several setbacks and challenges that she detailed in her talks, Kelsey graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida and went on to work for Coca-Cola before becoming a motivational speaker.
