To get to know our new faculty and staff a little better, we asked them to answer a handful of questions from the Proust Questionnaire — the famous questionnaire that Vanity Fair asks celebrities to answer on its back page. Here, we learn a little bit more about Middle School Director Galen Hamann, who earned her bachelor's degree from Earlham College, her master's degree in Education from St. Joseph's University, and her master's of divinity degree from Harvard University.
Q: When and where were you happiest?
A: I'm happiest whenever I am in the mountains or by the ocean.
Q: Which talent would you most like to have?
A: Musical talents — of any kind.
Q: What do you most value in your friends?
A: I value an understanding and a care for one another, as well as a sense of fun and an ability to laugh together.
Q: What are your favorite names?
A: Anastasia, Esperanza, and Juniper.
Q: What is your motto?
A: I have two, both of which I heard as a high school student at a community service conference, and they have stuck with me ever since. Attribution of these is unclear to me, but they are not my creation.
The first is: I am one. I am only one. I can't do everything, but I can do something; therefore, I will not refuse to do what I can.
The second is: If you are coming to help me, don't bother. If you are coming because you believe your liberation is tied up in mine, please join me.
