Head of School Ted Koskores ‘70 P ‘10, ‘13 has been selected as Commencement speaker for the Academy’s 144th Commencement exercises, which will take place Saturday, June 12, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on the Main Campus.
Rain date for the event is Sunday, June 13.
The event will adhere to COVID-19 protocols for the safety of those in attendance. The Academy will allow a limited number of guests (six per graduating senior), require preregistration, and follow the state’s graduation guidelines, including those regarding the wearing of masks and physical distancing.
Only the eighth head of school in Thayer’s history, Koskores holds the distinction of being the only alumnus to ever lead the Academy. He returned to Thayer in 2003, and his 18-year tenure has been marked by steady enrollment growth, a revamped curriculum, increased professional development opportunities for faculty, strengthened support for students with learning differences, greater accent on global education and international experiences, and a focus on the importance of community. He is fond of telling students that “life is a team sport” where all community members are invested in one another’s success.
Koskores also guided his alma mater through a complete reimagining and revitalization of the school’s physical campus. Under his watch and among other building improvements and additions, Thayer constructed a new performing arts center, The Hale Theater, and the Fish Fitness Center; fully renovated many of its athletic fields, all of its libraries and gyms, The Pulsifer College Counseling Office, and The Cahall Dining Hall; added the Upper School Commons and separate wings for computer science and robotics and the Litchfield Biology Labs to its existing Glover Building; created the Jared Branfman ‘00 Memorial Sculpture Garden; recently opened the Thayer Sports Center, which houses the Valicenti Ice Rink; and set in motion the planned construction of a new middle school.
Another significant milestone of the Koskores era was the introduction of a fifth grade class to the Middle School in the fall of 2018.
Prior to Koskores, Thayer’s heads of school (then referred to as “headmasters”) were, in order of service: Jotham Sewell, William Gallagher, Stacy Southworth, Gordon Thayer, Peter Benelli, William “Bill” Elliott, and Eric Swain.
In all, Thayer’s Class of 2021 includes 139 graduating seniors.
