Thayer Academy's 2019-2020 academic year began Sept. 4 with Convocation, an annual tradition where all Upper School and Middle School students, flanked by faculty and staff, assemble on the main lawn in front of the tower of Main Building.
"I wish you the very best this year," Head of School Ted Koskores '70 P'10, '13 told those gathered for the event. Calling the start of the school year "a time of excitement," Koskores urged students to demonstrate kindness, leadership, and respect both on campus and in the outside world.
"Most of all, we want you to engage in the community," he said.
As president of the Thayer Academy Community Council, Caitlin Caulfield '20 also addressed the crowd. She welcomed all students but singled out the Class of 2020 — this year's graduates and her fellow classmates — as well as the fifth graders standing before her.
"To the fifth grade, this is the first chapter of your book," Caulfield told the Class of 2027.
Caulfield urged students to try new things, meet new people, and seize opportunities.
"I look forward to all of the new adventures that will unfold, and I hope you will, too," she said.
The ceremony ended with the concert choir singing the Academy's alma mater.
