As Co-Chairs to this year’s Thayer Auction, we hope you will join us on Friday, March 2, 2018, at Granite Links Golf Club for this wonderful evening. The Auction is Thayer’s premier fundraising and social event where we come together to celebrate and support the talented and caring faculty at Thayer Academy who make a difference in the lives of our children every day. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Faculty Excellence Fund, that provides support of professional growth and development opportunities for Thayer’s faculty, as well as Parent Association programming that has a community-wide impact through supporting faculty programs, student groups, bringing speakers to campus for topical conversations, and so much more.
 
This spirited night will include a cocktail reception, seated dinner, silent auction, live auction with NECN and NBC 10 Boston's morning anchor, Brian Shactman P '24, as our live auctioneer, live musical entertainment provided by Boston Music Award winner and Thayer alumnus Louie Bello '94, and dancing. With your help, we hope to make the event our most successful Auction yet! 

This year we have two beloved faculty members, Angela Toussaint and Jim MacVarish P '11, who will be our featured speakers for the evening. We look forward to hearing how they have benefited from the Faculty Excellence Fund, and cannot wait to learn how their experiences have enriched their teaching.

Feb. 26 - RESCHEDULED Upper School Student Screening of "If They Had Known" Documentary Screening - “If They Had Known” is a documentary film that focuses on the risks of the current party culture. It is not a film about addiction or substance abuse. It addresses the risks of recreationally mixing prescription drugs with alcohol. Our kids live in a world with too many options. The common trend of experimenting with prescription drugs and alcohol is unfortunately very common in high schools and college campuses across the country and is resulting in tragic accidents. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Thayer’s Director of Counseling, Jess Matzkin, LICSW, and Lt. Michael Want P ’22, Braintree Police Department.

Pennies for Patients - February 16th - March 9th The Middle School will be participating in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients fundraiser from Feb. 16 - March 9. Pennies for Patients is a program that gives students the experience of working together to raise awareness and funds in honor of thousands of children and adults fighting against cancer. We are asking that students, parents, faculty, and staff join in this effort of raising awareness and collecting funds to benefit the LLS’s mission, “to find cures for blood cancers and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families”. The Middle School’s 2018 goal is $4500! Please encourage your student to take an active role in supporting this cause by bringing in loose change, dollar bills, or other monetary amounts to help us reach our goal. Checks are accepted and should be payable to “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society." If you have additional questions, please contact Middle School Counselor Jarvis Wyche  jwyche@thayer.org.

Feb. 22,  Dinner &  A Show, Mrs. Browne will be hosting a "Dinner & A Show" for Middle School students who would like to attend the dress rehearsal for the Upper School Musical "Merrily We Roll Along" on Thursday, Feb 22 from 5:30 to 7:30pm in the CFA. Please contact Mrs. Browne for details and to sign up.  cbrowne@thayer.org

Feb. 26, Middle School Science Cafe, Kathleen Regan, BS in Biology from the State University of New York at Albany, MS in Ecological Teaching and Learning from Lesley University. Teacher Naturalist at Mass Audubon’s Blue Hills Trailside Museum. Students can sign up on the science cafe bulletin board across from room 205 and can see Mrs. Young with questions. 

Feb. 26, 3:45 - 4:45pm   The next Snack and Study at the Hale Learning Center will discuss learning styles to help students determine which style best suits them.  Students will learn whether they are visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners, or a combination of different styles.  Armed with that knowledge, they will be able to develop work habits and study strategies which are best suited for them and will increase their chances of success.  Students can sign up here to reserve a spot.  Please email Maryann Shafter (mshafter@thayer.org) with questions.

March 5, Declamations: Students have been working hard with their declamations this winter, most students impressing their English teachers as happens each year.  Finalists are now vying to be one of the dozen or so performers in the Declamation Celebration on Monday, March 5th at 1:45 in the CFA. We don't know yet who will be performing, but we do know that their performances will represent some of the best oral presentations middle school students can make.  All are welcome.  By next week (2/23), students will know who will be performing.

​​​​​​From the Parent Athletic Council:  A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support the Thayer Boys and Girls Basketball teams for our Pink/Black Out Nights!  Students enjoyed pizza and drinks before both games and the stands were filled with students, faculty, and families who heartily cheered on our athletes.  It was so great to see so much school spirit!  And we raised  $1,300  for the American Cancer Society from the sale of our special T-shirts.  If you missed out, there are a few left in stock in the Campus Store. Our next two events are the festive Spring Tailgates, which will be held on Saturday, May 4 and May 12.  We will be looking for donations and volunteers at these fun events so look for links in future TNNs.  

Lastly, is your child playing a spring sport and you would like to purchase team apparel?  The sport-specific team links are now up on Thayer.org.  Simply click on the specific team and you will be directed to a link to the store.

Notes from the public "If They Had Known Screening" on Feb. 6:

Parents gathered last Tuesday evening in the Center for Fine Arts Hale Theater for a screening of If They Had Known, a 30-minute documentary about the death of a 19-year-old college student, Clay Soper, who passed away in 2015 after mixing alcohol and prescription drugs.  

After the screening, Jess Matzkin, LICSW, our School Counselor, Mark Vonnegut, M.D. P'21, a pediatrician, and Lieutenant Mike Want P'22 from the Braintree Police Department, shared their impressions and reactions with the audience.  Parents asked questions and voiced their concerns with the panelists and one another about the inherent risks of the current party culture. 

There was a great deal of interest and discussion about how parents can help address these issues.  Dr. Vonnegut shared his concerns about how we support our children in dealing with underlying issues such as anxiety and self-esteem. He also noted that while this one tragic event took place in an affluent town in Massachusetts, it could have happened in any kind of community from any background.  “All of our children are special,” pointed out Dr. Vonnegut.  Teenagers today face more pressures than ever before on a “Race to Nowhere” conveyer belt, trying to earn top grades and participate in a variety of extracurricular activities.  Kids are pushed to the edge of exhaustion by over-scheduling, too little sleep, and pressure to achieve.  Stress-related illnesses, depression, and anxiety are rampant.

One parent observed that we need to educate our children about the fact that there are many people who do not drink alcohol and that there are many different ways to have a fun social life without alcohol and drugs being the backbone of how they spend time socializing with their friends.

Lieutenant Want emphasized that parents are held responsible if there is underage drinking at parties held in their homes.  The Social Host Law makes it against the law to serve or provide alcohol to underage guests or to allow them to drink alcohol in your home. The criminal penalty is a fine of up to $2,000, imprisonment for up to a year, or both. Additionally, you can be financially responsible if your child or underage guest injures another person (or himself) as a result of having consumed alcohol.  Civil judgments can be for millions of dollars. He talked about the significant increase in overdoses the town of Braintree has seen in the past year.  Braintree saw 100 overdoses, which resulted in 4 deaths. 

Jess Matzkin noted that she often talks to students about the stress and pressures of high school life and her concern about alcohol.  The health and well-being of our children depend on our reaching out to them and helping them learn the tools they need to get through times of stress.  Social belonging, which includes having friends, family, activities, interests is key. Self-esteem comes from a sense of belonging. It is important for kids to be recognized and valued by others.  This can be achieved by an extracurricular activity, job, hobby, sport, or volunteer work.  Children need to know that it is OK to ask for help and guidance and have time and space to learn and do what they truly love.
