Thayer Academy has selected Evan Carlson to lead its boys varsity basketball program for the 2025-26 season.

“In our search, Coach Carlson stood out as a candidate with an impressive combination of competitive basketball experience, extensive coaching in the AAU league, proven ability to recruit and develop student-athletes, and a strong understanding of the importance of creating an environment where our players feel known, connected, and prepared,” wrote Athletic Director Bobbi Moran in a recent email to Thayer basketball families announcing the decision.

In her message to families, Moran noted that Carlson is committed to supporting Thayer’s current coaching staff in their efforts this season and looks forward to meeting both coaches and student-athletes in the near future. Thayer’s varsity team is currently led by Richard Fesik, who stepped in as interim head coach following the death of Mike Babul, who suffered a sudden heart attack Dec. 30, 2024, due to undetected and untreated critical heart disease.

Carlson brings an accomplished history of coaching across New England’s most competitive basketball venues. Most recently, he served as head coach for both the MetroWest and Middlesex Magic AAU programs, and he led the U15 Under Armour team to multiple national tournaments throughout the country. In his role as player evaluator for the Middlesex Magic, he has coached and developed more than 100 players across seven different age groups.

“His proven track record of developing young athletes and his genuine passion for fostering a love of basketball stood out throughout the hiring process,” added Moran.

Thayer boys varsity basketball is one of 16 teams in the Independent School League (ISL) and participates in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class A division for tournament play.
