Thayer Athletics Wraps Up a Strong Winter Season

Winter sports at Thayer have come to a powerful end, with just one team left to compete in their postseason.

Best of luck to our Varsity Swimming team who is competing at the NEPSAC ‘Division III’ Championships tomorrow at Worcester Polytechnic Institute! Trials begin at 9:00 AM and the finals begin at 4:00 PM!

The Boys Varsity Hockey team saw its season come to an end in the NEPSAC Martin/Earl Quarterfinals after a tightly contested 2–1 loss to fourth-seeded Brunswick School at Avon Old Farms. Brunswick came out quickly, scoring twice in the first period to put the Tigers in an early 2–0 hole.

But Thayer refused to back down. In the second period, Tommy Wilkinson ’27 sparked the Tigers with a goal, finishing a play set up by Ty Hymovitz ’27 and Nick Sumner ’27 to cut the deficit in half. The third period saw Thayer push relentlessly for the equalizer, generating pressure and several quality scoring chances. In net, Tyler Moschella ’26 stood tall throughout the game, stopping 36 of 38 shots and keeping the Tigers within striking distance. Despite the late push, the tying goal never came, and the Tigers’ season ended with a hard-fought effort that reflected the competitive spirit they carried all year.

The Girls Varsity Hockey team also battled in a postseason thriller in the NEPSAC Patsy Odden Quarterfinals against Buckingham Browne & Nichols, a familiar opponent after the teams had skated to a 2–2 tie less than a week earlier.

As expected, the rematch was tight from the opening puck drop. Strong defensive play and excellent goaltending on both sides kept the game scoreless through two periods. The tension finally broke early in the third period when BB&N found the back of the net. Thayer responded with determination. With just over eight minutes remaining, Captain Abby DeAnzeris ’26 delivered a clutch power-play goal, finishing a play set up by Lydia Kealty ’28 and Shea Richardson ’27 to even the score.

The Tigers continued pressing for the go-ahead goal, creating chances in the closing minutes, but BB&N capitalized on a late opportunity, scoring with just 90 seconds left before sealing the game with an empty-net goal. In goal, Maddie Hayes ’27 delivered an outstanding performance with 32 saves. Though the result ended the season, the Tigers finished with much to be proud of, including the leadership and impact of seniors Abby DeAnzeris ’26 and Riley Devlin ’26.

On the basketball court, the Girls Varsity Basketball team also faced a tough postseason test, traveling to take on top-seeded Loomis Chaffee in the NEPSAC Class A Quarterfinals.

Loomis came out firing in the opening quarter, building a 12-point lead behind strong shooting. But the Tigers responded with poise in the second quarter, moving the ball well and knocking down timely shots from beyond the arc to cut the deficit to six by halftime.

The second half remained competitive as Thayer continued to battle, but each push was met with a response from Loomis. Sophie Gaultier ’28 led the Tigers with 22 points, while Mari LaMonica ’28 added 17 in a strong offensive effort. Though the season ended that afternoon, the team’s growth and resilience throughout the year left plenty of optimism for the future.
