Varsity Swimming

Varsity Swimming spent last Sunday at Roger Williams University for the EIL/ISL Championships, with both teams delivering strong finishes despite battling illness throughout the week. The Girls placed 4th overall in the ISL Championship standings, while the Boys also earned a 4th-place finish.

The meet was highlighted by several standout individual performances. Mary O’Connor ’28 led the way with a 4th-place finish in the 200 IM and 5th in the 100 Back, while Amelia Castillo ’27 secured 4th in both the 200 Free and 100 Fly, scoring critical points for the Tigers. On the boys’ side, Andrew Hernandez ’28 delivered a strong championship showing, placing 4th in the 200 IM and 5th in the 100 Back.

Additional recognition goes to this week’s Captain’s Oranges recipients:

  • Sara Zhong ’29 stepped up in a major way, filling in on Breaststroke for the 200 Medley Relay and competing hard in the 50 Free and 100 Breaststroke despite limited meet experience this season.
  • Faith Elias ‘29 turned in one of the meet’s most impressive improvements, dropping 13 seconds from her previous best in the 500 Free and winning her heat in come-from-behind fashion.
  • Laurel Fireman ‘28 shaved two seconds off her 100 Free with a 1:08 and then surpassed it again with a 1:07.04 relay split later in the meet.

The Tigers’ effort and grit were evident all day, and the team looks forward to traveling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute this weekend (Saturday, March 7) for the NEPSAC Championship meet!

Varsity Alpine Skiing

The Tigers wrapped up their season at the NEPSAC Championships at Pats Peak, closing out a snowy and competitive winter on a strong note. Despite a long day on the mountain, conditions cooperated with quality snow and afternoon sunshine, creating a fitting championship atmosphere.

Both the giant slalom (GS) and slalom (SL) courses proved demanding, testing racers’ technical skills and mental toughness. The boys squad battled through challenging sets, highlighted by Ben Pike ’29 and his outstanding 7th-place finish in GS to lead Thayer. Will Herbst ’31 delivered one of the day’s most impressive efforts, standing as the only Tiger on the boys side to complete both SL runs. First-year racers Rocco Monfredo ‘30 and Cole Harper ’29 showed tremendous poise in their championship debut, handling adversity with maturity and determination. The team ultimately placed 15th overall.

On the girls side, the SL course presented significant challenges, but Sienna Hunter ’29 cracked the top 30, completing both runs in her first NEPSAC Championship appearance. Captain Caroline Silva ’26 demonstrated grit and leadership, powering through two tough runs. In GS, the Tigers responded well to another demanding set, with all five racers completing both runs, led by strong performances from Tatiana Calvillo ’28 and Sienna Hunter ’29. The team ultimately placed 13th overall.

Competing on the championship stage provided valuable experience for a young and developing roster, and the team’s resilience was evident throughout the day.
