Thayer Alum Morgan McGathey ’25 Wins 2026 Beanpot Championship with Harvard Women’s Hockey

Wherever she plays, Morgan McGathey ’25 wins. This week was no exception.

McGathey added another championship to her growing résumé, helping the Harvard University Women’s Hockey team capture the 2026 Beanpot Championship at TD Garden. The victory marked yet another moment on a big stage for a player who has made a career out of rising to them.

Winning has followed McGathey at every stop, beginning with her time at Thayer Academy, where she established herself as one of the most accomplished players in program history. A two-year captain, McGathey set the competitive standard for Thayer Girls Varsity Hockey, leading by example with relentless effort, elite skill, and an expectation to compete every shift. Her impact translated directly to results, as she powered Thayer through multiple championship-level seasons while earning league and regional recognition year after year.

Individually, her prep career was defined by dominance with school scoring records, repeated ISL and NEPSAC honors, and statewide recognition, including the John Carlton Memorial Trophy from the Boston Bruins as Massachusetts’ top high school hockey player. More importantly, her success elevated everyone around her, turning Thayer into a perennial contender.

"When the best player on the team, in the league, and one of the best in the country is the hardest worker on and off the ice, it impacts the way everyone competes. Morgan set the tone every day and the team responded to that,” says Thayer Head Coach, Michael Flynn.

That winning mindset has carried seamlessly into the collegiate game. At Harvard, McGathey continues to do what she has always done best: compete when it matters most. The Beanpot title stands as another example of her ability to deliver on college hockey’s biggest stage.

Adding to the moment, members of Thayer’s Girls Varsity Hockey team were in attendance at TD Garden, cheering on McGathey and witnessing firsthand what a winning standard looks like. For current Tigers, it was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when preparation meets opportunity.

From Thayer to Harvard, Morgan McGathey’s career tells a clear story: she builds programs, raises expectations, and wins. And she’s just getting started.
