Mathletes finish strong; Masroor shines at national level

Thayer Academy’s Mathlete Team finished fourth out of 13 schools in the small school division of the New England Math Competition held April 28 at Shrewsbury High School.

Upper School Math Faculty Dan Forrest and Upper School Math Faculty Derek Keough — the head coach and assistant coach of the Mathletes, respectively — both called it a strong finish to a fantastic year. The Mathletes once again saw success in the regular season of the Southeastern Massachusetts Math League (SMML) and continued that success in the playoffs; they earned the opportunity to compete in the Mathlete State Competition, also held at Shrewsbury High School, and finished in second place in the March 30 contest. That result qualified the team to compete in the New England Math Competition, which is run by the New England Association of Math Leagues (NEAML). The invite to the New Englands was the first for a Thayer squad since the 2006-07 school year, said Forrest, who called the berth “quite an achievement.”

In related mathematics news, one Mathlete, Razzi Masroor '24, has also been competing individually in a series of national-level math exams, including the United States of America Math Olympiad (USAMO). The junior has excelled in these high-level exams; as a result, Masroor has earned an invitation to the prestigious Math Olympiad Program (MOP) this summer; the program is run out of Carnegie Mellon University.

Forrest and Keough congratulated all 16 Mathletes for their efforts during the season. The 16 members of the 2022-23 Thayer Academy Mathlete Team are:
Tommy Bi ‘23 (captain)
Gavin Zhao ‘23 (captain)
