Isokan presentation highlights Black History Month
Isokan, the African American / Black affinity group at Thayer, celebrated Black History Month with a Feb. 28 presentation to Upper School students in the CFA’s Hale Theater. Isokan members used the time to recognize Black history and heritage; presenters also noted the incredible cultural contributions that, despite needing to overcome obstacles and hardships, Black Americans have made to the larger American society.
David Morriset ‘27 and Alyssa Durant ‘27 chose food as their discussion topic while Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Director Matt Ghiden offered a presentation on the important role music plays in the Black experience. Michael Wubeshet ‘26 and Kau Kgafela ‘27 explored the literary contributions of Black Americans while Paige Johnson ‘26 and Elle Grant ‘25 focused on contributions to the language itself. Jasmine Jones ‘25, John Brice ‘25, and Cathy Macharia ‘28 served as emcees for the informative presentation, and the event closed with an Isokan video by Annadelle Agbonjiazoe ‘25.
At Thayer, ISOKAN serves as both a voice and a support group. The group facilitates events and meetings to uplift, enlighten, and educate not only Thayer’s Black community but the entire Thayer community. Events are geared towards creating growth in the areas of academics, community service, and social events. Upper School English Faculty Abigail Offei-Addo serves as the group’s faculty advisor.
