Lower Camp

Camp Thayer’s Lower Camp features activities that are scaled to size for young children, with a staff-to-child ratio of 1:5. Kids in this program enjoy a set schedule of activities, and remain with their groups and counselors throughout the day. Optional Extended Day schedules are also available.

General Camp

At Camp Thayer’s General Camp, children enjoy a variety of activities and are grouped with other campers their age. Groups are co-ed for grades 1 - 6. To encourage free expression and a sense of unity, girls and boys entering grades 7 and 8 are placed in single-sex groups. All activities provide kids with opportunities for new experiences or with time to spend on a favorite interest. These include sports, drama, music, dance, computers, pottery, sailing, and a ropes course.

CIT Program

  • Weekly from June 24 through August 16
  • For ages 14 to 15 years old

CITs (Counselors in Training) are assigned to groups or activities as apprentices to the head and senior counselors. Participants develop leadership and interpersonal skills. As part of their training, CITs get a working knowledge of the many activities and program areas offered by Camp Thayer. Each week will be limited to 25 CITs. The application deadline is March 22, 2019. An interview and references are required. Candidates should submit an application, then contact Kristan Gately (kgately@thayer.org) after March 25, to schedule an interview.

Extended Day

Weekly from June 24 thru August 16

Extended Day options are available for students of all ages in ALL programs and are supervised by a head counselor who is assisted by senior and junior counselors. Activities may include arts & crafts, board games, computers, recreational swimming, and four square.

Morning Session: 7:30 to 8:30am
Breakfast is provided in the Dining Hall.

Early Afternoon Session: 2:00 to 4:00pm
Held in Main Building for Lower Program children. Campers participate in activities for the remainder of the day. Snacks are provided.

Sports Camps

Camp Thayer's Sports Camps allow kids to learn and develop their athletic skills in a fun, friendly, non-competitive environment. Highly skilled instructors and coaches teach game strategies and offer a full range of instruction. (Lunch and free swim included)

Baseball
Improve your hitting, pitching and glovework with Rick Forestiere, Thayer’s current Varsity Baseball Coach and Athletic Director, and his All-American staff. Emphasis on strategies, rules, hitting, pitching, positions, fielding mechanics and baserunning, with daily scrimmages.

Recreational Basketball
Coach Mark Fiedor seeks enthusiastic players who are ready to learn and develop their hoop skills! Players are grouped by age and ability. A.M. sessions feature individual/group instruction; P.M. sessions feature scrimmages and games.

Basketball Skills & Drills
Thayer Head Varsity Basketball Coach Brandon Odom '04 and his group of talented staff provide positive and informative instruction about the game of basketball. Come participate in dynamic skill drills and stations during the morning session and listen to lectures from collegiate as well as professional athletes in the afternoon. In addition, competitive scrimmages and games will round out the day and highlight what you have learned.

Golf
Camp Thayer's Golf Program will be held at Braintree Municipal Golf Course and Harmon Club, with instruction provided by Thayer Golf Coach Ed Flynn. The program includes golf instruction, free swim, and a group activity. Transportation will be provided by Camp Thayer to and from the golf course. The camp is limited to 16 golfers.

Girls Lacrosse
Girls lacrosse camp is offered to players of all levels ages 9-14. Our all-star staff is made up of stand-out current high school and college players—alongside top-tier high school coaches. All levels of talent and ability are welcome. Athletes will be evaluated and grouped based on skill level, and have fun competing in our infamous “Final Four Tournament” while improving their fundamental skill level, “lacrosse IQ,” fitness, and most importantly individual confidence. They also grasp the benefits of team work!

Boys Lacrosse
Boys lacrosse camp is an instructional camp offered to players grades 4-8. Our staff includes the Thayer Boys Varsity Lacrosse coaches and current high school and college lacrosse players. We will teach the game of lacrosse in an effort to make each player better, more confident, and more creative by the end of the week. We will focus on fundamentals, decision-making, and teamwork through a variety of skills and drills. We will demonstrate the skill, practice it through repetition, and then use it to compete. We believe in having fun and working hard, and we will conclude the week with a day of individual and team competitions, based on the skills we've practiced with an emphasis on how we've improved throughout the week. Snack and lunch will be provided as well as afternoon swim. What to bring: Full lacrosse gear, stick, cleats, and tennis shoes.

Lax & Crafts for Kids
Start your kids early learning the basics of lacrosse with experienced coaches and staff! Designed for the littlest ones. This camp covers the fundamentals and team interaction while developing athletic skills and coordination. Lunch and snacks provided; fun with arts & crafts and swimming in the afternoon.

Learn and develop your soccer skills with coach Jake Spedden. This week's program is open to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced players, and is grouped by ability and age, with individualized instruction.

Daytrippers
A wide range of varied trips is in store for Camp Thayer Daytrippers! Daytripper sessions may include fun times at Water Wizz, a Paw Sox baseball game, whale watching, a tour of Fenway Park, exploring the Harbor Islands, a trip to the Aquarium, Nantasket Beach, mini golf, a visit to an amusement park, and/or other exciting activities including sailing, rollerblading, and kayaking. NOTE: Some trips require early departure and/or a late return.

Sharks
SHARKS is an exciting week-long course on sharks led by renowned shark expert and Thayer Alumnus Dr. Austin Gallagher ’04, Chief Scientist of Beneath the Waves, and Thayer Upper School Science Department Head Don Donovan P ‘10, ‘13. SHARKS features engaging and informative talks and fun activities, engaging laboratory experiments, and hands-on experience tagging sharks and doing research in Cape Cod. Monday, Tuesday and Friday will be on the Thayer campus all day. Wednesday and Thursday we will leave Thayer in the morning and be out on a boat off of Cape Cod. NOTE: Some trips require early departure and/or a late return.

Theater Camps
Directed by Thayer Upper School Arts faculty Kelly Hines and Dan Alosa, each production is custom written and musically arranged to feature all students in their best light and create a meaningful collaborative ensemble theatre experience. Students receive professional instruction in all foundational aspects of theatre arts – singing, dance, acting, and basic stagecraft. Large casts offer mentorship and support, and every student finds their moment to shine.

Heroes and Villains
What happens when Disney’s famous Heroes and Villains gather for an awards ceremony like no other? Who will win the coveted golden statue for being the Best of the Best? Come help us find out! With characters like Peter Pan, Moana, Jafar, Ursula, Cruella DeVille, and the Incredibles, there is sure to be something for everyone in this original musical production featuring songs like "Go the Distance," "I Just Can't Wait to be King," and "How Far I'll Go."

High School Musical Two
Following last summer’s hit, we return to our Wildcats in High School Musical Two. This is an ensemble-based production which features your favorites: Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Kelsi and the whole gang! Songs include “What Time is It,” “Fabulous” and “You are the Music in Me.”

Sidekicks and Silliness
In this original play, wanna-be sidekicks attend a class to learn how to be the best friend of the hero. Instructed by Olaf, Flounder, Maui, the Genie and Lumiere (and others), our musical features the best of Disney’s sidekick songs: “Under the Sea,” “Friend Like Me,” “You’re Welcome,” and many more.

NOT Grease
What happens when you are the “new girl” who joins the Middle School Musical already in progress…and it turns out to be Grease?! With a feminist bent and a sense of humor, the “new girl” helps the cast make Grease the show it SHOULD be, while still retaining its classic songs, including “Greased Lightning,” “Summer Nights,” and “We Go Together.” We explore this musical with a whole new hilarious perspective!
