About the Program:
The Thayer Girls' & Boys' Varsity Crew program participates in the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) and competes against NEPSAC schools as well as other premier rowing programs in New England. Former student-athletes have gone on to participate at the college level at schools like Bates College, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, and Connecticut College to name a few. John GearyCoachJohn joined Thayer Athletics in the fall of 2021. Currently, he is the Head Coach of the Varsity Crew team as well as an Assistant Coach for the Varsity Wrestling team. John earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University where he started his rowing career as a walk on coxswain. He eventually became the Varsity Heavyweight Coxswain and his crew went on the win a bronze medal at the Dad Vail Regatta in 1996. John enjoys rowing his 1x boat recreationally at Green Harbor River Rowing Club and at Mousam Lake in Maine. Outside of rowing, John has a history of coaching wrestling at the youth level in Hanover. John wrestled in the early 90’s for Salesianum School in Wilmington, DE and more recently was the co-founder of Hanover Youth Wrestling in 2010. He helped build Hanover youth wrestling from 12 wrestlers to one of the largest wrestling youth wrestling programs in Massachusetts. When he's not coaching, John works as an industry professional in the sport of rowing and his company manufactures rowing equipment for some of the most prestigious universities and national federations in the sport. He lives in Hanover with his wife and 4 kids.

Kathleen RileyAssistant CoachKatie joined Thayer in 2021 as a middle school science teacher and coach with 10 years of previous teaching and coaching experience. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Childhood Education in Science with a 5-9 extension in Biology from Canisius College. While attending Canisius, Katie was a member of the Division I Rowing team as a rower and coxswain. She earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Notre Dame of Maryland University while participating in the OperationTEACH program. Katie resides in Weymouth with her husband Mike.

Jeffrey BoothAssistant CoachJeff originally joined Thayer Athletics in 2015 as a coach for the crew program, and most recently serves as an Assistant Coach for the Varsity Crew team and the Varsity Alpine Ski team. Jeff is a US Rowing Level 3 coach and has worked with several area programs including the Boston Latin School, Lasell College, Duxbury Maritime, and Harvard house crew. Jeff is a member of the Riverside Boat Club in Cambridge and has competed in the Head of Charles four times, the Masters Nationals, and the CRASH B Sprints. Outside of rowing, Jeff has a passion for skiing and competed as a slalom racer in high school and as an adult. While not coaching, Jeff works as a group manager in learning and development.
