About the Program:
Thayer Boys' Soccer is one of 16 teams in the Independent School League (ISL) and participates in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) 'Class B' division for tournament play. Our comprehensive schedule includes ISL and NEPSAC opponents, and our home games and practices take place on our main grass field on campus. Recent alumni have gone on to play soccer at the collegiate level at schools like Stonehill College, Merrimack College, and Trinity College to name a few. Ian Wheeler
CoachCoach Ian Wheeler assumed the role of Head Coach of the Boys' Varsity Soccer team in 2022. A graduate of the Noble and Greenough School, Class of 2008, Ian won an ISL Championship along with two trips to the New England 'Class A' Tournament. Wheeler was a Regional 1 ODP selection and played Club Soccer for the F.C. Greater Boston Bolts, having been a part of the only Boys Club team from Massachusetts to win a U.S. Soccer National Championship, captured in 2005 under Francis Okaroh. Upon graduation from Nobles, Ian played soccer for Franklin & Marshall College under Dan Wagner. He majored in racial studies while at F&M and later transferred to the University of Southern California where he entered USC’s Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism. Ian has worked in the software industry for the last 11 years, while coaching various club teams in the Greater Region 1 area. Recently, Ian spent time working with the Philadelphia Union Youth Academy at their headquarters in Wayne, PA and now lives in Weymouth with his wife, three children, and 175 pound rottweiler, Bhalu. -

Jed Wartman
Assistant CoachJed Wartman joined Thayer in 2022 as the Academy’s first assistant head of school for student engagement and well-being. Wartman’s responsibilities include counseling, health and wellness education, student health services, advising, leadership development, and service programs. Before his arrival at Thayer, Wartman worked at Governor’s Academy as dean of students, a dorm parent, and boys varsity soccer coach. Prior to that, he worked in higher education for 15 years, including roles at Colby College and MIT. He has also served as an executive coach and consultant for schools and other nonprofit organizations. Wartman graduated from Bowdoin College with a degree in Spanish and education and a focus on psychology. He then earned a graduate degree from the Harvard School of Education. Wartman lives in Braintree with his wife Brynn and their two boys, Micah ‘30 and Theo.
