Ways to Give
The Annual Fund directly supports Thayer’s students and faculty, providing the essential dollars necessary for continued academic, programmatic, and aesthetic enhancements. In recent years, the support of our donors through the Annual Fund has provided for the renovation of the Brickyard and Cahall Dining Hall, the implementation of the laptop program, the creation of new courses in Statistics and Robotics, and the building of the Makerspace.
Each year, gifts to the Annual Fund will be counted in the fiscal year during which they are made. Thayer’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.
You can make a gift of securities worth any amount to support Thayer Academy. An unrestricted gift of securities will be applied to the current year’s Annual Fund. You can also direct your donation to support a fund or program that is particularly meaningful to you.
When making an outright gift of stock, a donor typically transfers the stock to Thayer. In order to determine the value, Thayer will use the mean sale price on the day it comes into our possession as the appraised value, and we will provide the donor with the appropriate charitable income tax deduction letter.
Transfer of Securities:
In the case of securities, please instruct your broker to transfer the securities to the account of:
The Trustees of Thayer Academy
Morgan Stanley Smith Barney
53 State Street
Exchange Place, 39th Floor
Boston, Massachusetts 02109
Once you have instructed your broker to make a securities transfer, please contact Neeta Beepath, Director of Annual Giving, at 781.664.2511 or firstname.lastname@example.org to ensure proper transfer and acknowledgment.
Capital gifts are typically larger gifts given over a period of several years, and can support both endowment as well as capital projects. In recent years capital support has funded the building of the Center for the Arts; the creation of the Hanflig Technology Center; the creation of the Cahall Campus Center and the renovations of the Pulsifer College Counseling Center; as well as the addition of capital to financial aid and Thayer’s general endowment. Thirty-five percent of Thayer students receive financial aid for a total of over $7 million annually.

A planned gift can offer the opportunity to support Thayer while creating a personal and meaningful legacy. Planned gifts can often provide valuable tax benefits and, in some cases, income for life to the donor. Whether you use cash or other assets, such as real estate, artwork, or stock, the benefits of funding a planned gift can be significant. By including Thayer in your estate plans, you can help strengthen Thayer while preserving your existing assets.
Individuals who make a planned gift to Thayer are welcomed as members of The Southworth Society. All Southworth Society donors will be listed in the Annual Report and are invited to special Southworth Society member events.
Planned gifts can be tailored to the unique circumstances of each donor, and some typical options include:
Bequests: This is a popular and flexible way to make a legacy gift. By remembering Thayer Academy in your will or living trust you can make a gift of a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate once all of your other bequests have been fulfilled.
Life Insurance: Naming Thayer as the owner and/or beneficiary of your life insurance policy will grant Thayer the death benefit and your continued payment premiums will become tax-deductible gifts to Thayer.
Retirement Plan Assets: Retirement assets, such as a 401K and an IRA, can generate estate and income taxes, sometimes leaving little for your heirs. By designating Thayer as a beneficiary, you can potentially avoid these taxes while supporting Thayer at the same time. This gift is a simple alternative to the expense of updating your will. The beneficiary designation card on file with the plan administrator determines who receives these assets.
Charitable Gift Annuity: A gift annuity is a contract in which you donate assets that Thayer then reinvests. Thayer agrees to pay a fixed payment to you, a family member, or friend of your choosing, for life. What is left of the remainder from the annuity will benefit Thayer. This type of gift can provide tax advantages, but it also can be used to supplement retirement income.
