THAYER GALLERY SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 2010-2011
GLEN SCHEFFER- PhotographySeptember 13 - October 8, 2010Gallery Reception: THURS, SEPT 16 - 5 pm to 8 pmGlen Scheffer arranges and qualifies interiors and objects in order for them to leave their prescribed identity behind. Through his camera lens these subjects become fin art for us to explore and savor. He creates new personalities for libraries, rogue rock venues, and stacks of found records. His work often suggests sound or silence: the crackling and dancing of old stackd records, or the five chairs backstage, erect and hushed as if watching us watching them. Many of Scheffer's images are tense and almost comical, yet these are juxtaposed with the seriousness of a library interior and it's ominous attempt to keep the quiet. Whether amusing or contemplative, Scheffer's series are breathtaking in their grandeur and intriguing through their intamcy. It is with the combination, and along with his tenacious printing skills, that the body of work speaks...volumes.
AL WILLS - '52 Collection - Mixed Media October 16 - November 12, 2010 Gallery Reception: THURS, OCT 21- 6 pm to 8 pmAfter graduating from Thayer Academy in 1952, Dr. Arthur Wills got his undergraduate degree from Harvard and then studied medicine at B.U. In 1966, this Marshfield-based patron of the arts joined his father's long time practice, Downtown Medical Associates, where he combined his practice of medicine with a passion for art until retiring in 2004. Over the years, Al amassed an impressive collection that includes, among many others, such important Boston artists as: Gay Youse, Bruce Anderson, Jack Wofle, Jack Kramer, Marilyn Powers, Jason Berger, Iso Papo, and sculptor Lloyd Lillie. Then, in the late '80's, Al began inviting a group of artists to paint on Hupper Island, Maine where he has a summer home. That group, known collectively as the 'Hupper 5' includes contemporary artists Luke Randall, Michael Carr, Sue McNally, Manueul Rincon, and Ted Tihansky, all of whom have been widely exhibited on their own. Join us for a sampling of these wonderful artists, and enjoy the fascinating stories they tell of one man's life-long commitment to New England art!
