Throughout its history, Thayer Academy has relied on the generosity of its alumni, parents, and friends to support the important work of the school. We are deeply grateful to all who give so generously at every level to make Thayer Academy the very special place that it is.
You can support teaching and learning at Thayer in a variety of rewarding and meaningful ways. Annual Fund dollars support the annual operating budget in many ways. The Annual Fund provides tuition assistance, supports faculty salaries and professional development, and enhances Thayer's academic, arts, and athletic programs.
You may designate the use of your gift, or make your contribution as a general gift with no restrictions. Unrestricted gifts, in particular, are important because they allow the school to direct the funds to where they are needed most and can have the greatest impact.
Types of Gifts
Gifts can take a variety of forms, and careful planning can help maximize the advantages to both the donor and the Academy. Most commonly, gifts take the form of cash or securities. If you would like to discuss donating other types of assets to Thayer, please call the Development Office at 781-380-0500.
Cash
Gifts of cash are the most direct and popular type of charitable gift. They are fully deductible for federal income tax purposes to the extent provided by law. Gifts of cash may be made outright or used to fund a lifetime income vehicle. An outright gift of cash is considered made on the date the gift is hand delivered or postmarked if mailed. Therefore, year-end contributions postmarked by December 31 are deductible even if received in January. Also, because of the tax savings available to donors who itemize deductions, the net cost to the donor will be lower than the actual amount of the gift.

Securities
With careful planning, charitable gifts of appreciated long-term property (i.e., property held for more than one year), such as securities and real estate, provide greater tax benefits than those available to a donor of an equivalent value in cash. That is because in addition to receiving a charitable deduction for the full market value of the gift, the donor avoids capital gains and any sales commission that would have been payable if the property were sold. In order to avoid capital gains taxes, gifts must consist of the securities themselves, rather than the proceeds from their sale. In the case of securities, therefore, you must instruct your broker to transfer the securities to the Academy's agent. Matching Gifts
Many businesses match the personal gifts made by employees, retirees and family members to educational institutions. Information on your company's matching gift program may generally be obtained from your human resources department.
Thayer Academy is a 501(c)(3) organization. A copy of the U.S. Dept. of Treasury ruling is available upon request.
