 | Q. | What is the deadline for the Financial Aid Application and how is it awarded? | | A. | The deadline for the Financial Aid Application is Friday, January 7, 2011. All financial aid awards are based on need, as demonstrated by the financial aid and tax forms families submit. Our financial aid committee determines how to distribute the available financial aid funds among the families who apply. About 33% of Thayer students receive financial aid for a total of over $4.5 million.

 | Q. | How do I apply for financial aid? | | A. | Go to sss.nais.org and follow directions to complete the on-line form. Please be sure to code in Thayer Academy to receive your information. |

 | Q. | What standardized tests are required? | | A. | All applicants are required to take either the SSAT (Secondary School Admissions Test) or the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) by the application deadline of February 1. If you are applying to the Middle School (grades 6-8th), we ask that you submit scores from the ISEE. If you are applying to the Upper School (9th-11th), we ask that you submit scores from the SSAT.

 | Q. | How many spots are available in each incoming class? | | A. | Sixth, seventh and ninth grades are our biggest entry years. On average, we enroll 60 students in the sixth grade, 15-16 students in the seventh grade and 45 students in the ninth grade. Eighth, tenth and eleventh grades add new students as space is available and depending on enrollment. We do not accept new students into our twelfth grade. |

 | Q. | How big is Thayer and how many students are in each grade? | | A. | Thayer has a total of 695 students, 215 in the Middle School and 480 in the Upper School . We aim to enroll 60 students in the sixth grade and between 75-80 in the seventh and eighth grades. In the Upper School each grade contains about 115-120 students.

 | Q. | When can I visit Thayer with my family? | | A. | During the fall, Thayer hosts open houses for its Middle (grades 6-8) and Upper Schools (grades 9-12). Prospective students and their families are able to tour our campus and buildings, hear from faculty and students, and pick up Admissions materials.
Individual interviews and campus tours are available from September 15 - February 1. Please call Admissions at 781-664-2221 to arrange for specific times and dates for your visit.

 | Q. | What is the deadline for submitting an application? | | A. | The deadline for submitting an application is Tuesday, February 1, 2011. (N.B. financial aid applications are due Friday, January 7, 2011). Candidates whose applications are completed by this date will receive an admission decision on or just after March 10. Candidates whose applications become complete after the February 1st deadline will be considered on a rolling decision basis if spaces become available.

 | Q. | What happens once my child is accepted? | | A. | Upon a candidate's acceptance to the Academy, parents are required to sign an enrollment agreement to hold the applicant's place in his/her class. An enrollment deposit is required, a portion of which is applied to the coming year's tuition. After signing the enrollment agreement and making the necessary deposit, subsequent cancellation of enrollment will result in forfeiture of the enrollment deposit or tuition, depending on the date of cancellation.
All accepted student are invited to spend a full day shadowing a current student, attending his or her classes, being our guest for lunch, and staying for the afternoon program if that is of interest. We also have Welcome/information sessions after the acceptance packets arrive at home and before the deposits are due. These events include key personnel from Thayer including Head of School Ted Koskores, Upper and Middle School Heads, Academic Department Heads, Athletic Directors, etc. who are on hand to make short presentation and get all your questions answered.

 | Q. | Is transportation to school supplied? | | A. | Round-trip bus service is available, for an additional charge, from specific, centrally located points in Canton, Cohasset, Dedham, Duxbury, Hanover, Hingham, Milton, Norwood, Plymouth, Scituate, Sharon, Stoughton, and Westwood.  | Q. | Can I apply to Thayer after the application deadline? | | A. | Yes. After the deadline, we tell applicants that they can apply to our wait list. After you complete the application, the Admission Committee will review it. If the committee feels you are a good match for Thayer both academically and personally, you will be placed on our wait list, pending a space becomes available. |

 | Q. | Are you ever able to take applicants off the wait list? | | A. | Yes. In a handful of cases over the spring and summer, as places become available, we are able to admit qualified students from the wait list. |

 | Q. | If I complete an application by the deadline of February 1st, when will I hear? | | A. | We mail all of our regular-round admissions decisions on March 10th. Admissions and financial aid decisions are mailed together on that date.

 | Q. | Can I spend a day at Thayer? | | A. | Yes. We invite all accepted students to visit us after our spring recess, at the end of March through April. We choose students with similar interests to host your son or daughter for the day at Thayer where they will attend classes, be our guest for lunch, and stay for the afternoon program, if they choose to.

 | Q. | How competitive is Thayer? | | A. | In the last few years, admission to Thayer has become increasingly rigorous. This past year, for example, we accepted 200 students from about 600 applications—or about 1 in 3. We are looking for students with honor roll grades (A’s and B’s) in a strong academic program; above average scores (60% and above on independent norms on the ISEE and SSAT tests); has demonstrated participation in sports, music, art, or community service; and evidence of strong character. We want to enroll hardworking students who want to get involved in the Thayer community.
