| | Thayer’s tradition of excellence in athletic competition complements a rigorous and challenging academic program. Students are involved in interscholastic athletics in grades six through twelve, but may also elect Intramurals & Fitness or Physical Education to meet their requirement. Although participation on interscholastic team sports is not a requirement, nearly 80% of our students play at least one sport and many are two- or three-season athletes. Through team sports, students are encouraged to reach their potential in physical fitness, skill development, and teamwork. Sportsmanship, discipline, and leadership are emphasized by coaches at every level.
With the expansion of our Health Program at the Upper School, we hope to educate our students in skills that will enhance their wellness and self-esteem. We stress lifelong activities and exercise physiology. Those juniors and seniors not participating on an interscholastic team are scheduled for physical education two periods per week including CPR training, which is also a graduation requirement. Students are required to participate in physical education and/or be on a Thayer interscholastic team for the first 11 terms of high school. Passing the first 11 terms results in being exempt from P.E. third term of the senior year.
The Middle School believes that athletics are extremely important in introducing students to lifetime skills and interests and in developing a commitment to the school community. Therefore, the athletic requirement for Middle School students may be fulfilled by participating in either: 1) Intramural & Fitness offerings that include team and lifetime sports activities, fitness, and new games; or 2) interscholastic team sports. |
