At Thayer Academy Middle School we strive to work with each individual to build confidence in all that they undertake. It is a team approach involving the student, teachers, and parents. The Thayer experience is a balanced one including rigorous academics, arts and athletics, and the development of personal and social skills. The safe and nurturing environment provided allows students the opportunity to explore new areas of interest, as well as a chance to build upon those activities in which a student is already involved.
Many Middle School age students find it difficult to see the relevance of education in their own lives. It is one of the most challenging and exciting times in the whole educational experience. It is during these years where teachers hear “I already know that!” or “So what?” and “Does it really matter?” This age group can be confused about who they are and where they fit into a community. Their peers take on new importance and influence, causing academics to sometimes take a backseat to social opportunities. It is also the first time in their lives they are being viewed as independent individuals with increased personal and academic responsibilities. However, they are still dependent upon adults within the family and school sphere. The Middle School years are without a doubt one of the most influential times in a child’s development. With so much change and growth, it is essential for all members of the community-teachers, students, coaches, and parents- to help guide students through the myriad of changes they will experience.
The Thayer experience allows students to become confident, well-rounded, independent learners in a safe, supportive and energetic environment. I hope that you will stop by the Middle School to see the students in action and learn more about the Middle School experience.
Warmly,
Carson Smith Middle School Director
