Who's Who in the Admission Office
Jonathan White P '09,'11, '15, Admission Director - Jon White has served as Director of Admission for 17 years at Thayer. Having attended an independent school, Jon's life has been largely shaped by those early experiences. His two older boys are Thayer graduates, and his daughter is currently a student in the Upper School at Thayer. Jon enjoys talking with young people interested in Thayer and hearing from them about their experiences, interests, and perspectives.
Having taught English, coached soccer, basketball, and rowing, and lived in a dormitory at two boarding schools before coming to Thayer, Jon enjoys his other Thayer "hats." He is a freshman adviser for eight freshman each year, assisting them in their transition, meeting with them weekly to check in and support their endeavors, and communicating with their parents about their progress. Jon is also a member of the Camp Bournedale faculty team in the freshman's initial off-campus experience at the beginning of September. In addition, Jon has taught college essay writing seminars to juniors and has coached Middle School intramural tennis in the spring.
Liz Bruno, Admission Associate - Liz began working at Thayer in 2013 as a part-time admission associate and an assistant coach for the girls' varsity ice hockey and lacrosse teams. The fall of 2014 marks her first year as a full-time member of the admission staff.
Liz grew up just north of Boston, attended Brooks School in North Andover, Mass., and then went on to earn a BA in psychology at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. She was a four-year member and captain of the Trinity varsity lacrosse team, and will continue to share her expertise as a girls' varsity lacrosse coach at Thayer. Liz is delighted to be a part of Thayer's close-knit community, and she particularly likes getting to know current and prospective students.
Barbara Kenslea, Admission Office Manager - Barb has been part of the Thayer community for 11 years, most recently as an associate in the Admission Office. She brings a varied background to admissions having been a teacher, coach, and Co-Director of Athletics here at Thayer. Some of her favorite experiences at Thayer have involved coaching, particularly as the coach of the first girls soccer team. Barb enjoys working with prospective students and their families and introducing them to the Thayer community. Barb has a B.S. from Springfield College.
Jessica Leaver '00, Associate Director of Admission - Jess Leaver joined the Admission team in 2008 as the Associate Director of Admissions. Before working in the Admission Office she worked for two years in the Development /Alumni Office at Thayer. Jess is a class of 2000 alum and attended both the Middle and Upper school. After Thayer, Jess continued her education at Fairfield University, where she received B.A. and majored in Communications with a minor in English and Journalism. Jess also played Varsity Lacrosse for the Stags and was the captain during her senior year. Along with her roles in Admission, Jess coaches JV soccer, Varsity lacrosse and is a 9th grade advisor. As an alum and now current member of the Thayer community, Jess is extremely passionate about Thayer. She is excited to meet the future faces of Thayer and share her experiences!
Jennifer Welch, Associate Director of Admission & Diversity / Director of International Student Enrollment - Jennifer Welch joined Thayer’s Admission Office in 2010. Her responsibilities include overseeing the International Student Program, serving as a faculty advisor for the OMEGA diversity club, and coaching Thayer's girls’ varsity ice hockey team.
Prior to arriving at Thayer, Jennifer was an admission associate at The Steppingstone Foundation, working with students and families in the greater Boston area. Before that, Jennifer was a national trainer for Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society; a teacher in the Boston Public Schools; and an AmeriCorps volunteer. Over the last 15 years, she has been committed to assisting young people from diverse backgrounds in their quest for educational success.
A South Shore native, Jennifer attended the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Conn., and the University of Vermont. She holds a B.A. in psychology, a minor in sociology, and was a four-year member of the UVM women’s ice hockey team. Jennifer looks forward to each new school year, and she likes to emphasize that “Meeting potential students and their families is the most enjoyable part of working in admissions.”
