Like all independent schools, Thayer Academy relies on the generosity of its alumni, parents, and friends to provide a comprehensive educational experience for today's students.
Tuition covers approximately 80% of the cost of educating a Thayer student each year, with the balance coming from our Annual Giving programs and income from the Academy's endowment. Donors who contribute $1,877 or more to the Academy during its fiscal year become members of the General's Council, and are recognized each year by the Board of Trustees.
Where the Money Goes
At the core of Thayer’s annual giving program is the Annual Fund. It supports the annual operating budget, and provides funds for tuition assistance, faculty salaries, and the Academy’s strong academic, arts, and athletic programs. Gifts to the annual fund can be unrestricted or directed to an area that reflects a donor’s particular interest.
The Sponsor a Scholar program allows donors with the ability to make annual gifts at the highest levels ($20,000+) to support Thayer’s important financial aid program by “adopting” a student.
The Senior Legacy program is a Thayer tradition begun in 2002. It provides an opportunity for members of the senior class and their families to make a special gift to the Academy in support of a project of their choosing. Over the years, this program has raised more than $1 million and has enriched the Academy’s campus with new classrooms, building improvements, outdoor spaces, and programs that will continue to benefit our community for many years to come.
Thayer Academy's Teaching Fellows Program was established in the Spring of 2011 to increase the racial and cultural diversity of the Academy's faculty and, ultimately, of its community. The two-year program allows for the hiring of young college graduates who are interested in a career in education. These individuals work under the mentorship of a senior Thayer faculty member, and over time, assume increasing classroom responsibilities. They are paid a stipend and are required to enroll in a master's degree program, which is paid for by the Academy. Funding for this program is provided by generous donors.
TYPES OF GIFTS
Gifts can take a variety of forms, and careful planning can help maximize the advantages to both the donor and the Academy. Most commonly, gifts take the form of cash or securities. If you would like to discuss donating other types of assets to Thayer, please call the Development Office at 781.380.0500.
Gifts of cash are the most direct and popular type of charitable gift. Cash gifts can be made by check or credit card. If you'd like to pay by check, please mail your gift to Thayer Academy, c/o Development Office, 745 Washington St, Braintree, MA 02184.
Our secure online gift form is the fastest and easiest way to make your gift to Thayer. We'll send an immediate confirmation once your credit card information has been submitted. If you'd prefer to make a credit card payment by telephone, please call us at 781-380-0500.
With careful planning, charitable gifts of appreciated long-term property (i.e., property held for more than one year), such as securities and real estate, provide greater tax benefits than those available to a donor of an equivalent value in cash. That is because in addition to receiving a charitable deduction for the full market value of the gift, the donor avoids capital gains and any sales commission that would have been payable if the property were sold. In order to avoid capital gains taxes, gifts must consist of the securities themselves, rather than the proceeds from their sale.
