Fine & Performing Arts at Thayer
The arts are woven into the daily fabric of student life at the Upper School, where it is our belief that arts, academics, and athletics work in concert to provide the most balanced education. In arts courses at Thayer, students benefit from hands-on experience. Our students are actively engaged in their own learning process, and the process is what we value most, because we believe it frees our students to produce at higher levels of aesthetic excellence.
Our goal is to expose students to inventive thinking and creative problem solving. We encourage developing artists to look beyond the immediate answer to a question – in fact, we challenge them to question the first solution that comes to mind – to attack problems from multiple angles.Grading is pass/fail and we do not endeavor to compare one student’s work to another. Competition at the upper or middle school level has been intentionally ruled out, yet we are proud to note that Thayer students who pursue the arts in college, or as a career path, find themselves uniquely qualified to compete in those worlds.
