Applying to Thayer ♦ A Step-by-Step Guide

Click on each item in the checklist below for a full explanation.

1. Request Admission Information & Complete a Preliminary Application

If you have not already done so, you can request a packet of admission information here.

It is also helpful if you complete a preliminary application before scheduling a campus interview and tour, so that we might know something more about your interests before you visit.

If you would like a preliminary application, you can submit your request here.

2. Visit Campus and Schedule an Interview

In October, Thayer hosts Open House events – one each for the Middle and Upper Schools. Prospective students and their families can tour the campus, hear from faculty and students, and pick up informational materials.

  • Upper School Open House → Saturday, October 20, 2012 → 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts
  • Middle School Open House → Saturday, November 3, 2012 → 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Cahall Campus Center
  • Contact the Admission Office to schedule an individual tour and interview. (781.664.2221 or kmarsano@thayer.org)

3. Register for Tests

Candidates for grades 6 – 8 take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Register at www.iseetest.org.

Candidates for grades 9 – 11 take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). Register at www.ssat.org

Numerous test dates and locations are available for both tests, and Thayer's campus is a test center for many of these dates. All test information and registration materials are included in the Student Guides to Testing which are sent with our admission information packet.

4. Complete the Full Application

You will need 3-4 recommendations to complete the application, so you should ask for reference letters from:
1. Your current math teacher
2. Your current English teacher

Also ask for:
3. A school evaluation from a current Placement Director, Guidance Counselor, or Principal
4. A personal reference from someone you know who is not related to you (Optional)

After the first marking period, ask an administrator at your current school to send a transcript of academic work and testing to Thayer's Admission Office (745 Washington Street, Braintree MA 02184).

All of these documents should be submitted by the application deadline: February 1 along with your application fee of $50. Download a printable copy of the Thayer Academy Admission Application here.
