Students, alumni, and families gathered on the fields to cheer on the Tigers at Homecoming last weekend. The sunny afternoon provided the perfect weather to watch Thayer student-athletes and catch up with friends under the tent.
The football team's win over Roxbury Latin was the first homecoming win for this year's seniors. An early touchdown run by Max Storch '18 brought the game to a 6-6 tie at halftime. The highlight in the game took place in the first half when Mike McDonough '18 caught a 42-yard reception that had his teammates ecstatic on the sideline. The team came out with a new mentality in the second half, led by additional contributions from Drew Callahan '18, Kevin Deree '18, and Colin Plante '20 and touchdowns by Jack Schneider '20 and Cole Roland '18. It was an overall memorable team win as the boys move to 4-1 on the season, securing a record of at least .500 on the season. Final score: 22-12 Thayer. Varsity Volleyball: The girls faced off at Homecoming against the top team in the league, Lawrence Academy. Led by captain Caroline Leta '18, the player of the game, and contributions from Kendall Roland '20 and Cassie Davidson '21, the team was winning or tied for the majority of the game. They were unable to hold a lead in all three sets, but look to carry some momentum into their two games this week against Dexter-Southfield and Middlesex respectively. Final score: 3-0 Lawrence.
Varsity Girls' Soccer: With two goals from Brittany Raphino '19 and one from Ally Sentnor '22, the girls beat a tough Lawrence Academy squad. Every player got time in the game and had a chance to make an impact in an all-around team effort. The team remains in first place in the league with a 10-1 record and four ISL games to go. They face Phillips Academy and Middlesex this week. Final score: 3-1 Thayer.
Varsity Boys' Soccer: The boys played a solid Lawrence Academy team and were led by valiant efforts by Sean Kennedy '18 in his return from a hamstring injury. Dominating most of the game, Thayer scored first off a free kick by Eli Wilson '20 and put-in by Owen Drometer '19. Lawrence came out strong in the second half, scoring on a penalty kick off a handball in the box to tie the game. In the 90th minute, Lawrence won the game on a shot from twenty-five yards out-- an absolute heartbreaker for Thayer after a well-fought game. They play Belmont Hill and Middlesex this week. Final score: 2-1 Lawrence.
Varsity Field Hockey: The girls faced off against Lawrence and played well overall, especially in the first half. Christina Meucci '19 received the game ball after her goal in the first two minutes of the game. Kristen Feeney '19 also contributed on defense and made some strong transition plays, eventually being moved to forward later in the game. They were unable to pull out the victory, but head into matchups this week against Winsor and Middlesex. Final score: 4-1 Lawrence.
Varsity Boys' Cross Country: Already off to a great start on the season, Thayer competed in a race against three other schools at Homecoming. They pulled out a victory over Nobles but lost to Roxbury Latin and Groton. Tommy Gaffey '20 continues to thrive, finishing the race in second place. The team moves to 10-4 overall and 8-4 in the ISL. Final score: Thayer finishes 1-2 on the day.
Varsity Girls' Cross Country: One of Thayer's top fall teams continues to shine. Facing off in a race against two other schools, the girls suffered their first loss of the season to Nobles, while picking up a win against Groton. The deciding factor, according to tri-captain Cassie Kearney, was that the team's third runner, Lillian Bradley '21, rolled her ankle and ended up finishing 1:30 slower than her previous time on the course. Although the team was upset, they are looking forward to the ISL Championships at Lawrence Academy in two weeks and hope to stay healthy with the goal of beating rivals BB&N and Nobles at the championships. They move to 9-1 on the season. Final score: Thayer finishes 1-1 on the day.
