Lillian Wentworth & history teacher/archivist Larry Carlson at the 2011 ceremony to recognize Mrs. Wentworth's 50 years of working for Thayer Academy.

Lillian Hickock Wentworth, a veritable institution at Thayer Academy, died on March 2, 2014. Lillian was connected to Thayer for 53 years. She arrived in 1961 as a teacher of history and English. In 1965, she became the library director for the newly-established Southworth Library. In 1977, she wrote the first history of the Academy, The Thayer Academy: 100 Years, 1877-1977, which was published as part of the school’s centennial celebration. In 1978, Mrs. Wentworth became Thayer’s director of publications and public relations. Finally, it was in 1987 that she took on the role that she would still be playing when she celebrated her own centennial: school historian and head archivist. Nobody knew more about Thayer Academy than Lillian Wentworth. Everybody who knew her admired and respected her ability to recall the most obscure and interesting pieces of information.
