Lower Camp

Camp Thayer’s Lower Camp features activities that are scaled to size for young children, with a staff-to-child ratio of 1:5. Kids in this program enjoy a set schedule of activities, and remain with their groups and counselors throughout the day. Optional Extended Day schedules are also available.

General Camp

At Camp Thayer’s General Camp, children enjoy a variety of activities and are grouped with other campers their age. Groups are co-ed for grades 1 - 6. To encourage free expression and a sense of unity, girls and boys entering grades 7 and 8 are placed in single-sex groups. All activities provide kids with opportunities for new experiences or with time to spend on a favorite interest. These include sports, drama, music, dance, computers, pottery, sailing, and a ropes course.

CIT Program

  • Weekly from June 26 through August 18th
  • For ages 14 to 16 years old
  • 9:00am to 4:00pm

CITs (Counselors in Training) are assigned to groups or activities as apprentices to the head and senior counselors. Participants develop leadership and interpersonal skills. As part of their training, CITs get a working knowledge of the many activities and program areas offered by Camp Thayer. Each week will be limited to 25 CITs. The application deadline is March 10, 2017. An interview and references are required. Candidates should submit an application, then contact Kristan Gately ( after March 27, to schedule an interview

Extended Day

Weekly from June 26 thru August 18

Extended Day options are available for students of all ages in ALL programs and are supervised by a head counselor who is assisted by senior and junior counselors. Activities may include arts & crafts, board games, computers, recreational swimming, and four square.

Morning Session: 7:30 to 8:30am
Breakfast is provided in the Dining Hall.

Early Afternoon Session: 2:00 to 4:00pm
Held in Main Building for Lower Program children. Snacks are provided.
$75 per week

Late Afternoon Session: 4:00 to 6:00pm
Held on the Upper School campus. Snacks are provided.

Sports Camps

Camp Thayer's Sports Camps allow kids to learn and develop their athletic skills in a fun, friendly, non-competitive environment. Highly skilled instructors and coaches teach game strategies and offer a full range of instruction.

Improve your hitting, pitching and glovework with Matt McGuirk, Thayer’s current assistant varsity baseball coach and former athletic director, and his All-American staff. Emphasis on strategies, rules, hitting, pitching, positions, fielding mechanics and baserunning, with daily scrimmages.

Co-Ed, week 3 (7/10-7/14) and week 5 (7/24-7/28)

Recreational Basketball
Coach Mark Fiedor seeks enthusiastic players who are ready to learn and develop their hoop skills! Players are grouped by age and ability. A.M. sessions feature individual/group instruction; P.M. sessions feature scrimmages and games.

Basketball Skills & Drills
Thayer Head Varsity Basketball Coach Brandon Odom '04 and his group of talented staff provide positive and informative instruction about the game of basketball. Come participate in dynamic skill drills and stations during the morning session and listen to lectures from collegiate as well as professional athletes in the afternoon. Football camp is led by Jeff Toussaint, the head coach of Thayer Academy's varsity football team, and his staff. Daily drills focus on fundamentals and position-specific skills, with daily razzle-dazzle and 7-on-7 touch competitions.

Grades 5-10
Boys, week 8 (8/14-8/18)

Camp Thayer's Golf Program will be held at Braintree Municipal Golf Course and Harmon Club, with instruction provided by Thayer Golf Coach Ed Flynn. The program includes golf instruction, free swim, and a group activity. Transportation will be provided by Camp Thayer to and from the golf course. The camp is limited to 15 golfers.

Boys Lacrosse
Thayer Boys Lax coach Stew Curran will lead Boys Lacrosse camp. Increase your "Lax IQ" with drills and small-ball games; learn dodging and shooting options in the offensive box, and defender drills to develop better footwork and approach. Get individualized attention for goalies to develop skills beyond ball stopping.

Girls Lacrosse
Girls lacrosse camp is offered to players of all levels ages 9-14. Our all-star staff is made up of stand-out current high school and college players—alongside top-tier high school coaches. All levels of talent and ability are welcome. Athletes will be evaluated and grouped based on skill level, and have fun competing in our infamous “Final Four Tournament” while improving their fundamental skill level, “lacrosse IQ,” fitness, and most importantly individual confidence. They also grasp the benefits of team work!

Girls, week 5 (7/24-7/27: 4 days)

Lax & Crafts for Kids

Start your kids early learning the basics of lacrosse with experienced coaches and staff! Designed for the littlest ones. This camp covers the fundamentals and team interaction while developing athletic skills and coordination. Lunch and snacks provided; fun with arts & crafts and swimming in the afternoon.

Learn and develop your soccer skills with Thayer Assistant Boys Varsity Soccer coach Jake Spedden. This week's program is open to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced players, and is grouped by ability and age, with individualized instruction.

Discover new talents, develop skills, and build confidence with fun new challenges!

A wide range of varied trips is in store for Camp Thayer Daytrippers! Daytripper sessions may include fun times at Water Wizz, a Paw Sox baseball game, whale watching, a tour of Fenway Park, exploring the Harbor Islands, a trip to the Aquarium, Nantasket Beach, mini golf, a visit to an amusement park, and/or other exciting activities including sailing, rollerblading, and kayaking. NOTE: Some trips require early departure and/or a late return.

Theater Camp 1: "Trolls" - Camp Thayer style
Come join us for an all singing and dancing "Musical Revue" of the colorful, overly optimistic Trolls and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their bellies. DreamWorks' TROLLS is a comedy filled with great music, heart, and hair-raising adventures. Campers will learn to sing and dance to their favorite songs from the hit movie culminating is a performance on stage on the last day of camp. Limit 25 children.

Theater Camp 2: “Footloose” - Camp Thayer style
Get ready to kick up your feet to sing, act, and dance in Camp Thayer's mini-musical version of Broadway's Footloose. This is the story of a teenage boy, Ren McCormack, who moves from Chicago to a small town in Texas where dancing is outlawed by the local Reverend. When Ren falls for Ariel, the reverend's daughter, the two of them shake up the town along with Ren's best friend Willard and his girlfriend, Rusty. The musical features hit songs including "Footloose," "I Need a Hero," and "Let's Hear it for the Boy" among many others. There will be a performance of the show on the last day of camp. Limit 25 children

Theater Camp 3: "Willy Wonka, Jr." – Camp Thayer style
Willy Wonka, Jr. follows the magical candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he creates a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his delicious chocolate bars. The lucky children who find these tickets win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of chocolate! Four of the winning children are nasty and bratty, but the fifth is the lovable Charlie Bucket. The children must follow Mr. Wonka's rules in the factory – or suffer the consequences brought on by the singing and dancing Oompa Loompas. The performance will feature the songs made famous in the original movie such as "The Candyman" and "Pure Imagination." There will be a performance of the show on the last day of camp. Limit 25 children.

Theater Camp 4: "Hairspray" – Camp Thayerstyle
Come join Camp Thayer's all singing, dancing and acting mini-musical version of Hairspray. Hairspray is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, who has only one passion—dancing. When her dream of becoming a regular personality on “The Corny Collins Show” comes true, she wins many fans and becomes an advocate for integration. The musical has hits including "Nicest Kids in Town," "Cooties," and "You Can't Stop the Beat." There will be a performance of the show on the last day of camp. Limit 25 children.
